Eight Days until Snapper season starts! Part of the beautiful FL Panhandle is the City of Destin, being "The World's Luckiest fishing Village". In my experience this has been Fact!
By no means am I a true Angler, but have had the opportunity to fish in several areas of FL and the Caribbean. Nothing has compared to the size and quantity of the fish I have caught here at home. Granted - one fishing trip in the Keys, I made the nieve mistake of packing a banana in my lunch. (Ooopsie- don't ever do this... Some Anglers believe that having bananas along on a trip will not only lead to a fishless day, but they can be responsible for a crew falling ill or just bringing bad luck. Stricter anglers will even go as far to have no remnants of a banana on the fishing boat; that includes Banana Boat sunscreen!)
In my case it indeed led to a fishless day and an angry Captain that I'm pretty sure envisioned himself throwing me overboard most, if not all of the day.
This year Governor Ron DeSantis announced the 2022 Gulf red snapper recreational season which will total 57 days, the longest season since the state assumed management of red snapper and will include both a summer and fall season.
“Snapper season is one of the most exciting times to be fishing in Florida, and I am excited to announce the longest season since the state took over management of red snapper,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “People travel from all over to enjoy the recreational opportunities we have in Florida that can’t be found anywhere else. Florida is proud to continue providing access and opportunities to all who want to experience the Fishing Capital of the World.”
The 45-day summer season will begin on June 17 and continue through July 31. The 12-day fall season is the longest fall season since the beginning of state management and spans the following dates:
October 8-9
October 15-16
October 22-23
November 11-13 (Veteran’s Day Weekend)
November 25-27 (Weekend after Thanksgiving)
We caught the beauty below just a couple miles off shore in Destin last year.
